CKV: Westmoreland, KS

I used the iMovie app to create a video about my hometown of Westmoreland Kansas. I chose to do it on Westmoreland because it has a lot of history to it. It used to play a big part in the oregan trail as well as surrounding communities. I feel as though it’s history shouldn’t be lost. The iMovie app is very easy to do. It costs $4.99 in the App Store.

It is pretty self explanatory and is even something your students can use for a project. You first pick a theme for your video and from there, you are able to put in your own pictures, videos, voice, or music. It’s an easy process to create a polished looking video. It can be used for a variety of things. I am impressed with this app and would like to use it in my future speech and drama classrooms. I can use it to provide information to the newcomers about different events, acting or speech styles so they can become more familiar with them.

Word Cloud

Wordcloud is a very constructive app to be used in the classroom. I discovered things I didn’t know you could do with technology. Making these pictures was very interesting and fun! It was also pretty simple to create! I don’t think I will use them very often if at all in my classroom, but I’m glad I know how to use it. It will be there when I need it! I could potentially have my students use it and make a project with it, then explain to the rest of the class what they used it for and why. But for my crop science and animal science class I will be able to give my students a subject and have them put words into the picture that deal with our specific topic. Below is what the app looks like.

Osmo Words Vocabulary Game

Osmo is a creative, fun and engaging way to teach using technology. You can make up your own educational games, then your students play with them. I decided to make a Osmo Words game. It was harder for me to use the other ones with secondary eduction and I decided that using words would be the best option in my future classroom. Since I am in speech/drama, I decided to make my words on parts of a theatre. Some of the list of words I used were upstage, downstage, director, monologue, props, lighting, set. All of the words will go to my library where students can find them. I think this game can be used as an essential study tool for students.

Using Apps in the Classroom

Still using the iTunes U app as I stated in my last post, Using Apps in the Classroom can be a beneficial tool for teachers. In order to get to the options for using apps in the classroom, open the iTunes U app and click on the link “for educators.” Then click the tab that says, “Using Apps in the Classroom” and there are 18 books that you can download into your iBooks to use.

Some that I thought were cool to look at are Tag Journal Lesson IdeasSketchbook Express, and Skitch.

I chose to do my review on Hopscotch. I shoes it because it was fun and creative and could be used for many different ages. It provides different ideas for games to use in the classroom. The games are beneficial and helps students learn the material. Every subject has a game they can use with it. It provides a fun way to give information and improve the students skills.

Inspiring Lesson Ideas

This is a series of iBooks that is published by Apple Distinguished Educators. Through the iTunes U app, you can pick many different iBooks to use in your classroom. This includes mathematics, social studies, language arts, science, and arts & music. To find the list of the 30 courses to choose from, go to the iTunes U app and click the “featured” icon and then on the “for educators” tab. That should take you to the list of iBooks to choose from. When you choose one you like, download it to your iPad.  Below is a picture of what the lists should look like.

Some titles that I found interesting were:

Secondary Visual and Media Arts: Create A Toy Challenge

Middle School Language Arts: ESL Book Reports

Secondary Physical Education: Organic PE: Basketball

The iBook I chose to review is News Writing with iPad.

Although my primary focus is in secondary education, I felt that this app would be good for my future speech and drama classroom. This course provides 18 different options to help improve students writing abilities. One of my favorites is Letters to the Editor. It shows how to write a letter to the editor. I like this one because if a student wants to write a letter to an editor, they will now know how to properly express their concerns. The iBook has many more great resources and can be used in a variety of classrooms.

One Best Thing iBooks:

One Best Thing iBooks has an outstanding variety of quality apps to be used in the classroom. The app that I specifically looked at is called, “If Shakespeare Could Talk: Transforming Literature with iOS.” This I Book tells of many different ways to get your students more interested in Shakespeare, as well as helping them understand the old English. Examples being turning the text into current messaging forms with texting, Facebook, Twitter, etc., having them make a video that explains the plot, and having the students cut half the text that they deem not as necessary to the plot in order to figure out what is actually happening. The iBook suggested many more ideas as well as different apps that would help. I would be able to use this in my classroom in many different ways. I could try out the different ways to help students understand Shakespeare and see which methods work best for wich students. The picture below is what the iBook looks like. It is free, and a great read.

Week 7 Reflection: Doug Off the Record

The blog Doug- Off the Record made a post about becoming a better writer. In this post, the author states that everyone always has room for improvement. The author then goes on to say that an app that can can help anyone become a better writer is called the “ProWritingAid.” This app gives feedback and fixes grammatical errors in a persons writing. It is pretty simple to use and a great resource for students, teachers, businesses, or anyone who wants to check an email or resume. It looks like the pictures below before and after you install it.

Digital Storytelling with the History of the Theatre

History of the TheatreThe picture and link above is something I just made from an app called Adobe Slate. It is a free app and the picture below is what it looks like in the App Store.

I chose to use Adobe Slate because I thought it was the best fit for what I wanted to do, which was to tell the history of theatre. It is a nice app to include pictures with text and a great way to show a timeline of events. This app is super easy to use. It is pretty much self explanatory and the pictures show up great. There are also different ways to show different pictures which I found was very nice because not all of the pictures fit in a certain way. I would definitely recommend this app! Especially to teachers! It’s wonderfully easy to use and is a great way for students to learn and even study with! It could even be something the students can create and use!

Week 6 Reflection: Ditch That Textbook

In on of the blog posts of Ditch That Textbook, the author talks about how to help students be more efficient and better in their writing skills. It provides a list of apps and a description for each one. I appreciate the thorough descriptions so that I don’t have to go and try to find them out myself. All of the apps have been hyperlinked and will take you right to the app if you click on it. It is a nice and easy way to learn about helpful apps and then be able to get to them right away! The picture below is of the page it takes you to when you click on the Turnitin app link.
